Interview with Janne Wirman of Warmen
We had the chance to catch Janne Wirman for a short interview in conncetion with the current Warmen release "Japanese Hospitility". We hope you and Janne don't get to mad about mixing some topics up ;).TrashAndRiot: Let's start this with a little word play: "Japanese Hospitality" and "Chinese Democracy" - what's the difference and what do these both have in common?
Janne: Hmm different albums, in common, east?
TrashAndRiot: As we all know "Chinese Democracy" is the current Guns N'Roses' release. Do you see any connections between GNR and Warmen? What are the main differences?
Janne: I actually was a big GnR fan back in the day (Appetite and Illusions) but that's about all the connection I can think of. A lot of differences I am afraid.
TrashAndRiot: Let's stay for another question in the GNR topic. W. Axl Rose is a maniac in piano and synth (esp when I think of the Use Your Illusion albums). You are a master of keyboards as well. Do you have anything in common when it comes to using the instrument?
Janne: I only have seen him play live on some Illusions live footage. Canīt think of anything too common.
TrashAndRiot: What is the best thing in playing keyboards for you? What is making this instrument so special?
Janne: I guess compared to other basic rock band instruments it's the versatility of being able to choose from totally different sounds.
TrashAndRiot: Some people say keyboards have nothing in common with old school music. What do you think about this statement?
Janne: Donīt know. Define old school?
TrashAndRiot: "Japanese Hospitality" is the current Warmen release. Are there any stories from the song writing and recording sessions you'd like to share with us?
Janne: Me and my brother Antti wrote most of the music. Alexi dropped by cause I asked him to write one song for Jonna and suggested himself to sing on "High Heels on Cobblestone" when he heard the song.
TrashAndRiot: Which is your personal favourite track on the album and why?
Janne: Too hard to choose now. Sorry :)
TrashAndRiot: How do you create the songs? Is it just you playing keys or are you working on it with the other band members?Janne: I get ideas playing by myself and then me and Antti check them out. With some stuff riffs etc I need a capable guitar player present.
TrashAndRiot: Do you play other instruments as well?
Janne: I used to play drums a lot but haven't played now for years. I know the very basics of guitar and bass.
TrashAndRiot: How do you combine the work in Children of Bodom and Warmen? How do you find time to write on new material for Warmen while you are touring with COB?
Janne: I work on Warmen when CoB is having touring breaks. I donīt write on the road cause like I said I need Antti present.
TrashAndRiot: Warmen is no live band at all. What are the reasons for this? Didn't you ever wish to tour with this band? (I know all of you are busy with the other bands as well.)
Janne: Yeah the other bands is one reason. With this release we are gonna look into playing a couple of shows.
TrashAndRiot: There are some guest singers on the album. Why did you choose these ones and why for these tracks?
Janne: All the singers are friends of mine and with some I have worked in the past. Some songs were written for specific singers.
TrashAndRiot: You covered Janet Jackson's "Black Cat". How comes?
Janne: Great song. Not easy to cover tho.
TrashAndRiot: A question for Antti: The Scourger parted ways with Jari in May. Not too many news about The Sourger come over to Germany. Is there anything going at the moment?
Janne: I donīt have Antti here, but I know the remaining band members are working on new material.
TrashAndRiot: Famous last words.
Janne: Thank you for the interest and the interview. I am off to dig a hole in my yard.
